An amazing workshop was held in Nicaragua to inspire community members to conserve birds and their environment! Concepción de María Private Wildlife Preserve (Reserva Silvestre Privada Concepción de María) and other local leaders participating in the Carazo Natural Capital Initiative, led the workshop, “Connecting Youth to Nature through Birds” to many diverse and dedicated participants. They were all excited about conserving their local birds and the environment. Cafe de Santos is a marvelous organization that is dedicated to sustainable development around the capital of Carazo. They work with combatting the threats that pose a danger to the environment and the local biodiversity. The workshop included environmentalists, representatives of natural reserves, agroecological farms, universities, BUCARAO travel organization, the Chilotes Museum and initiatives of rural community ecotourism in Carazo, Nicaragua like the Producer Organization of the Golden Triangle (Organización de Productores del Triángulo de Oro), backed by APRODIM. The workshop provided training for environmental educators to integrate bird watching, bird appreciation, and conservation through educational activities that children and their families in Nicaragua could participate in. The event was supported by people who love nature including members of the Carazo Natural Capital (Capital Natural de Carazo) and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The workshop was led by the environmental educator and interpreter Luis Cortes Bone.
The participants had an amazing opportunity to observe local birds up close! They learned to identify and appreciate birds in the wild in the Concepción de María Private Wildlife Preserve (Reserva Silvestre Privada Concepción de María) in Dolores, Carazo, Nicaragua. The nature preserve was the perfect setting for the participants to discover and learn to better recognize the birds of their region! One of the objectives was for the participants to fall in love for with nature. At the nature preserve, they could hear the songs of the beautiful local birds, see the colorful birds, watch their flights, and see the differences between the different types of birds. The whole experience was very beautiful and inspiring. The workshop was a success!
At the end of the workshop, the attendees talked about what they learned and how to instill an appreciation for birds and their conservation in their communities. The importance of birds in the environment was discussed, and an agreement was reached to unite in promoting the conservation of birds and their habitats in Nicaragua.
There is a phrase that says: “Nature speaks … but humanity does not listen to it”. But this time Nature was heard by everyone present. The participants were so excited to continue to care for their environment!
In addition, during the summer they also hosted a bird watching event in the Golden Triangle (Triangulo de Oro), a beautiful place in the heart of Carazo. It was a fantastic event!
